A definition of ‘Rapid e-Learning’ will vary depending on if you are the ‘developer’ or the ‘learner’. A developer’s definition is likely to be something like – ‘rapid e-Learning is a small ‘nugget’ of interactive content that addresses one learning outcome only, is relatively quickly and easily created (often from templates within the authoring tool), incorporates appropriate visual and aural media and allows the creation of quizes/tests for the learner to assess their progress’. A learner’s definition might be ‘rapid e-Learning is a short duration, accessible, interactive and fun learning object that is available 24/7 and allows me to quickly review and understand one aspect of a particular area of study on an ‘as and when’ or ‘just in time’ basis and then allows me to test myself on my understanding’.

Rapid E-learning: Whiz! Bang! Hey, nice job dude. How’d you do that?

Rapid E-Learning is akin to the ballroom quickstep. While being foreign to most; its perfect execution is admired by all because of its speed and value. Its process is one that involves the intense efforts of the participants, whereas the Instructional Designer is leading the partner(s) in a dance of compromise. The process is a compromise of time, quality, and value in an effort to create experiential learning.

The partners determine the pace based on the requirements, their skill, environment, and communication. Quality is determined given their short timeframe; whereas the partners decide what steps (if any) will be compromised. Value is the result of their dance with time and value in meeting or exceeding the requirements within the timeframe, all the while making their discipline transparent and sexy to the audience.

Rapid e-learning = a direct drive from ‘demanded’ to ‘delivered’ due to judicious use of templating tools

Rapid e-Learning is any time, any place learning focussed on your personal needs via your PC. It is rapid because it is right at your fingertips and does not need registration, travelling, hotel accomodation, etc. It, however, lacks personal touch and smell. And that is the only drawback ReL.

Rapid e-learning is a streamlined development process that gives students access to the training faster than traditional e-learning development. It is useful for projects that require a quick turnaround. The course can be followed up by a more interactive and media rich course developed with traditional e-learning development methodologies and tools.

“Rapid E-learning” is a misnomer, a hollow concept. “Quick, efficient development of multimedia training materials” doesn’t sound as jaunty, but avoids the misunderstanding inherent in this coinage that no amount of redefinition can fix.

Rapid eLearning – a few possibilities

Electronic learning made fast and easy while maintaining quality and ease of use.

Electronic learning developed using rapid prototyping techniques and elearning tools so development time is significantly reduced, but quality and ease of use are maintained.

The ability to rapidly and easily develop and deliver web, intranet, or computer based training.

Rapid e-Learning – to quickly delivery an cost effective, comprehensive program that is “technically” correct and meets the user and project goals.

Dare I mention that what is developed should be;

Accessible – to all users across many locations

Adaptable – to tailor instruction to individual and organizational needs

Affordable – to increase efficiency and productivity by reducing the time and cost to involved in delivering instruction

Durable – to withstand technology evolution and changes with out costly redesign and reconfiguration or recoding

Interoperable – to take instructional components developed in one location with one set of tools to another location with a different set of tools or platform

AND Reusable – Flexible enough to incorporate instructional components in multiple applications and contexts.

DOES THAT SOUND LIKE SCORM?

I think Rapid e-Learning is a new process to design, develop and deliver “custom-tailored” knowledge, therefore the final product depends on the client necessities and goals.

As a learner – it’s having fun while you learn.
As a developer – it’s about being creative.
