The Humble Hotspot

A hotspot is one of those tools in Articulate Storyline that lives happily outside the limelight. It’s an invisible little shape that you don’t really “see” when a course is published, so maybe you haven’t heard of it. Well, today I’d like to shine a light on the humble hotspot so you can add it to your list of go-to tools. Let’s look at two great ways you can use a hotspot in your projects.

Interactive Video

When you’re working with video in Storyline, the video is exposed to your mouse cursor—meaning, if you click on the video, it stops playing; click again, and it restarts. Sometimes this can throw off the timing in your project. To keep this from happening to learners taking your course, you can overlay a hotspot on top of your video. More Precise Click Areas

If you have a click-and-reveal interaction with multiple images that are close together, it’s hard to create distinct click areas for each image. No worries, you can solve the problem with a hotspot. Hotspots let you set up specific clickable areas and avoid the image overlap problem. I’ll walk you through the process in this screencast:
